In many coastal areas, protein-rich marine resources are abundant yet child malnutrition and livelihood instability remain persistent challenges. Low-value fish and bycatch, often overlooked or discarded, actually hold enormous potential when paired with the right innovation.
Through a science-driven approach, Berikan Protein transforms undervalued bycatch into Fish Protein Hydrolysate (FPH) a highly digestible, nutrient-rich ingredient that supports child nutrition while creating new income opportunities for coastal communities, particularly women involved in fish processing.
Fishermen’s Wives Empowerment
Berikan Protein Initiative is developing a science-based program for processing low-value bycatch into Fish Protein Hydrolysate (FPH) to support children's nutrition while opening economic opportunities for coastal communities, particularly women fish processors. This program is strengthened through UNDP support through the ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge (ABIC) to improve technology, standard operating procedures, and scale impact within an inclusive blue economy ecosystem.
Problem Statement
Despite abundant marine resources, many coastal communities in West Java continue to face child malnutrition and unstable livelihoods due to the underutilization of nutrient-rich bycatch.
- Child malnutrition and stunting remain prevalent in coastal areas, with rates still around 10–20% in several districts of West Java.
- Low-value fish and bycatch rich in protein and micronutrients are often unsold or discarded due to low market demand.
- Limited cold-chain infrastructure, poor post-harvest handling, and lack of processing facilities contribute to 20–35% post-harvest losses nationally.
- Coastal households face a dual burden: unstable income for fishers and limited access to nutritious food for children, particularly affecting women involved in fish processing.
Solution We Offer
Berikan Protein addresses coastal malnutrition and livelihood challenges by transforming low-value fish and bycatch into safe, scalable, and market-ready Fish Protein Hydrolysate (FPH) products through community-based processing and science-driven innovation.
Technology strengthening: Improved enzymatic FPH extraction methods to ensure high digestibility, nutritional quality, and production consistency.
- Standardization & food safety: Developed and implemented robust Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to meet food safety and quality standards.
- Product innovation: Piloted and commercialized FPH-fortified products, including gluten-free and dairy-free biscuits designed to support child nutrition.
- Community empowerment: Built capacity of women’s groups and fisherwives in fish handling, preprocessing, and FPH-based product manufacturing.
- Market integration: Enabled access to modern markets through online platforms, proving the commercial viability of locally sourced protein products.
- Scalable impact: Expanded partnerships with local governments and coastal communities to integrate FPH-based products into broader nutrition and livelihood programs.
- R&D-driven growth: Invested consistently in research and development to refine processes, adapt to scaling challenges, and maintain scientific integrity.
